It's a great place to live. We have been here three years now. On the negative side, we could use more transit in the area. There's a lot of through traffic traveling between two busy streets.
Not super safe for kids in the regard. Very quiet and dog friendly. Plus I can get anywhere fast any highway. Additionally, we have many small businesses nearby that enable community culture ". There's a lot of nature—parks, trails, fields—plus bars, fun shops, and restaurants. It's definitely a leader in keeping the city weird and special. It is easy to get onto MoPac and just 8 minutes away from the city. The area is heavily wooded and filled with deer. Plus its hip boutiques, food stands, restaurants, and bars. The North Loop Ave drag is amazing, with all its shops, restaurants, and bars.
There are so many people out and about strolling up and down North Loop all the way from Lamar. Although we don't have parks or dog parks, there is a triangle of parkland that we in the neighborhood developed and maintain, where people take their dogs to play frisbee, etc. Also we have special events for dogs. And a lot of the nearby restaurants and bars are outdoor-dog-friendly.
There are so many places to walk your dogs—a lot of trails, open fields, and parks. I'm not sure if there is a designated dog park nearby, though, and not all of the neighborhood streets have sidewalks. Many local bars welcome pets, too. For middle school, you can choose from Murchasion and Lamar Middle School. The high schools in the area are Anderson and McCallum.
There are also schools nearby. Also sometimes it's nice to take a bike. I wouldn't want to drive, as traffic can get pretty bad. A lot of people drive through this neighborhood to get to major Austin streets.
Even if MoPac is at a standstill, I can still make it into downtown Austin in 15 minutes, or I can shoot down Balcones. This is the true Austin with access to shopping, parks, restaurants, in a quiet location.
This area is also next to one of the better high schools in Austin none of the public high schools are particularly terrific.
There is also a fair amount of stuff on North Loop, which is nice and I imagine that Highland Mall will eventually be developed thus making this area very desirable.
The only downside is that the closest grocery store is one of the less nice ones and it's not all that close. It's close to some sketchy neighborhoods, but this is a nice pocket! It's good.
